Open Space Technology (OST) is an approach for hosting meetings, conferences, corporate-style retreats focused on specific and important issues but not beginning with any formal agenda, beyond the overall purpose or meeting. Participants willing to raise a topic for discussion come to the centre of the circle, write it on a sheet of paper and announce it to the group and then post it on a wall with the wall becoming the agenda for the meeting.
Those interested in a specific topic placed on the wall, will congregate in a group, discuss, set solutions as well as follow up tasks. At the end of the Open Space Meeting, the group will report their findings and follow up tasks, if any to the entire group.
The beauty of any Open Space Meeting is:
- All of the issues that are MOST important to the participants will be raised.
- All of the issues raised will be addressed by those participants most qualified and capable of getting something done on each of them.
Guiding Principles of Open Space:
- Whoever comes are the right people
- Whenever it starts is the right time
- Whatever happens is the only thing that could have
The One Law of Open Space:
The Two Foot Law – If at any time during the meeting you find yourself in any situation where you are neither learning nor contributing, use your two feet, go someplace else, refocus, re-energize and come back to the meeting ready to contribute.
Join us in June…A new and Fun Way to Discuss Important and Pertinent Topics Related to your Profession….CERTIFICATION. Why Not be on the Cutting Edge?
We guarantee you that this is not going to be your average run of the mill “dog and pony show” (no lectures, no falling asleep at your seat, and definitely no time to check your Blackberry out of boredom). You will have the opportunity to create and talk about certification topics that YOU are interested in!
Previously Launched at the October 2010 Chicago CNG Meeting…A Real Success!!
The Open Space concept was conducted at a previous CNG meeting in Chicago and was a huge success. It stimulated important conversations and exciting outcomes! Attendees were talking about this meeting for months to come!
“The CNG Chicago meeting in which the open space concept was utilized was one of the best certification-related meetings I have attended in a long time. I really felt that I had been able to provide input in the creation and discussion of current topics pertinent to the certification industry.” Ron H., Senior Certification Program Manager, DCAB
Some of the topics included:
- Certification Value Propositions for Members and Constituents
- The Business of Certification (How to Better Define the Profession)
- What Can We do to Move Certification Forward as a Profession?
This is just the tip of the iceberg! Please join the CNG Washington DC group and get your creative juices flowing in what will be an extremely rewarding experience.
