Description

CAYG is an initiative with 21 universities, and a recent $3M grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Institute for Educational Sciences, that envisions an incremental credentialing ecosystem in which all learners are recognized for what they know and can do as they acquire learning from multiple sources.

Leaders from the CAYG initiative and from Workcred will present information on this important initiative and how organizations can get involved to create pathways and greater access to their credentials.

Presenters

HOLLY ZANVILLE is a Research Professor and Co-Director of the Program on Skills, Credentials & Workforce Policy at George Washington University. Previously she served as a strategy director at Lumina Foundation, overseeing portfolios on adult learners, student success, future of learning and workforce, and research. She has held leadership positions at state higher education systems/boards in Oregon and Washington, and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education; held academic positions at community college and nontraditional university programs in multiple states; and served as consulted on K-20 strategic planning, community college networks, and distance education. She serves on the Executive Committee of International Council on Badges and Credentials (ICoBC).

NAN TRAVERS is Director of the Center for Leadership in Credentialing Learning at SUNY Empire State College. She serves as the PI for the Credential As You Go (CAYG) initiative, and has served as PI for CAYG #1 (planning grant) funded by two Lumina Foundation, and multiple grants that which explored the learn-work ecosystem, and impact of evaluating work-based learning, prior learning assessment, and incremental credentialing on the future of higher education. She led the development of the Global Learning Qualifications Framework to assess college-level learning, serves on the board for the Prior Learning International Research Consortium, is a lead contributor to the Learning Recognition Collaborative in conjunction with the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), and co-edits the journal: PLA Inside Out (www.plaio.org).

BILL WEST is a senior market leader and 25+ year veteran of the assessment industry. Bill has successfully served in a variety operational and sales capacities for test administration and credential management organizations as well as an NCCA-accredited non-profit credentialing association. Roles have included customer service, program management, business development. operations, and strategy. In these roles, Bill launched and managed numerous national and global assessment programs, assisted clients with expanding their businesses, implemented strategic partnerships, and developed new markets. 

An active contributor to industry associations, conferences and committees, Bill served on the board of directors for the Association of Test Publishers (ATP) and currently serves on two boards: the Certification Network Group (CNG) and the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE), owner of the NCCA accreditation standard.

KAREN ELZEY is the Associate Executive Director at Workcred. In this role, she works to advance Workcred’s mission to strengthen workforce quality by improving the credentialing system, ensuring its ongoing relevance, and preparing employers, workers, educators, and governments to use it effectively.

Ms. Elzey has over 20 years of experience in areas of workforce development. Most recently, she was the vice president of the Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF), where she was involved with incorporating 21st-century competencies—critical thinking, problem solving, analytical reasoning, communication, and working in multi-cultural teams—into the undergraduate experience to prepare students with the knowledge and experience to succeed in high-performing workplaces. She also led several of BHEF’s projects, including the integration of data analytics into specific academic disciplines, the development of cybersecurity undergraduate programs, and the creation of new media engineering programs.
